NKOTB FANS FLOCK TO ARMY'S JUBILEE HOUSE

The house at 10 Melville Avenue in Dorchester is not listed in any tourist guide but New Kids On The Block fans still manage to visit the former home of NKOTB members Jonathan and Jordan Knight in droves. Their childhood home is now a social service center for The Salvation Army and was recently featured in the Boston Globe.

RED KETTLES HIT THE STREETS EARLY

Wednesday, November 12 The Salvation Army of Massachusetts hosted the Red Kettle Kickoff - two weeks ahead of schedule. The early start is to help reach the goal of $3.3 million that must be met due to the ever increasing demand accompanying the economic downturn that has hit everyone hard.

Joining the Army at this year's kickoff was Mayor Thomas M. Menino. The event emcee for the 11th year in a row was WCVB Channel 5's David Brown.

"TRUST THE LORD, TRUST THE DONOR"

Every Officer of The Salvation Army in Massachusetts lives by these words. Today as Thanksgiving and Christmas near, the true meaning of the ‘giving season’ reveals itself with greater urgency as hundreds line up for help at our doors. The Salvation Army is known as a place where all are welcome and nobody is turned away – but that will be a hard standard to keep without your help.

Our Corps Community centers are already receiving twice the number of requests for help as they did last year. And winter is not yet up on us.

Many of you wait until the Red Kettles appear before you donate. But many individuals and families need your financial generosity right now. We urge you to consider donating today so that we may help the growing number of individuals and families in need who are coming to us with the hope and trust that we will be able to help them.

Recently the Boston Globe and Channel 5, WCVB, carried stories that focused on the dire need of people across the Commonwealth. To read the Globe article click here. To see the Channel 5 story click here. If you saw both and are ready to help right now, click here.

From all of us in The Salvation Army – but especially from all of those we serve – thank you and may God bless you.

WALMART INCREASES ARMY GIFT BY $250,000

Today, the Wal-Mart Foundation announced a $1.25 million grant to The Salvation Army. Red Kettles will, once again, be invited in front of Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations from Friday, Nov. 28 through Wednesday, Dec. 24. And this year, the Wal-Mart Foundation will invite customers to give early – and throughout the season – by hosting The Salvation Army bell ringers and Red Kettles for a special day of giving on Saturday, Nov. 8.

ONLINE RED KETTLE GOES VIRTUAL!

Tired of "bell elbow" and frostbite? Now you can ring for The Salvation Army ONLINE! The Online Red Kettle (ORK) is back by popular demand. In the 111th anniversary of the Red Kettle in Boston you can help others in need 24/7 just by lifting a finger and clicking your mouse. Challenge your family, friends and coworkers to see who can raise the most online.

The "giving season" will never be the same. It takes less than five minutes and only four simple steps for your ORK to go LIVE! Emails asking for support AND saying thank you are already written. At last - a great excuse to sit in front of your computer all day - helping others!

Just remember, while you are in the comfort of your house this winter deciding which website to logon to there are parents across the state deciding between heat and food for their children because they cannot afford both. So while you are online take a few minutes and click the ORK banner above or go to www.OnlineRedKettle.org and get started today. It's quick, it's easy and best of all it saves lives.

All-Women Recovery House Dedicated

Nearly one out of three individuals who need treatment for addiction is a woman. The Salvation Army recently dedicated the Eva Booth House to serve these women, confident they are more than twice as likely to complete treatment at a women-only center.

NECN visited the Eva Booth House and reporter Ally Donnelly shares one woman's journey - from a drug-fueled appearance on Cops - to recovery through The Salvation Army. To watch the NECN video click here.
